I was considered quite lucky to get a job just a few months after I graduated from the Singapore Polytechnic with a building diploma. I responded to an employment advertisement in the Singapore Straits Time. It was United Overseas Bank 大华银行 looking for a suitable site supervisor for their proposed 30 storey new head office building at Bonham street / Raffles Place. The job title was Clerk-of-works. I went for the job interview on 23 April 1971 at the UOB temporary head office,175-176 Cecil Street (UOB has sold the then HQ building. It is the present GB building location).I was employed by UOB as a contract staff and reported to work on 11 May 1971. I was stationed on the construction site. The site staff were required to do shift work to minimise overtime work. Mr Liew Peng Leong was the Property Manager and he was also the project manager. He stationed at Cecil Street office. Mr Goh Boon Peng was the resident engineer. All the site staff reported to him. The main contractor for the project was Low Keng Huat Construction. The project was completed in first quarter of 1974 and UOB had moved in to the new HQ building. There after I was employed as a permanent staff. My career path with UOB was as follows:
1. 11-05-1971 Clerk-of-works for proposed UOB HQ building
2. 01-02-1974 Assistant property officer (Internal officer )
3. 05-02-1977 Assistant property officer (Class 2)
4. 29-03-1982 Assigned to HongKong for 2 months project
5. 31-01-1984 Property officer (Class 1)
6. 15-02-1988 Changed title to Senior officer (grade 1)
7. 12-05-1986 General Manager Mr Goh Sin Tub early retirement
8. 09-12-1991 Received 25 years long service award (Omega watch, now still wearing)
9. 28-01-1995 Assistant Manager (grade 2)
10 07-01-2000 Deputy Manager (grade 3)
11 22-03-2006 Assistant Vice President
12 02-04-2009 extended service with one year contract
13 02-04-2010 Retired I have worked with UOB for 39 years.
I am very happy working with UOB & even more happy to be with the Property Division. I wish to thank all my colleagues for the support & assistance given to me in the past. With the good working environment and steady in come, I got married and managed to raise my family and sent the two children to the local universities.(NUS新加坡大学 & NTU南洋理工大学). Now I am retired. I can spent more time with my family, especially with my wife. I have more time to exercise regularly maintaining good health.
Thank you Uncle Wee 谢谢老黄。
