It gave me three good reasons to book the Genting Highland tour when I saw the promotion poster displayed at the Citi Express office at Kovan Hub.
1. I had not been to the Genting Highland hill resort for more than 15 years.
2. The pick up point at Kovan Hub was within ten minutes walk from my home.
3. The offer price was so attractive that I cannot resist. $108 per person for the 3 days / 2 nights tour inclusive of 28 seaters aircon coach, 2 nights accommodation at the First World Hotel, and a concert ticket performing by Hong Kong popular artists Susanna Kwan 关菊英 and Steven Ma 马俊伟.
Before leaving for the tour, I was told that Genting Highland was currently under major upgrading works. The old theme park was being demolished and will be upgraded to Universal Studio in near future. In order to keep business going, Genting Highland offering attractive packages during off peak period to attract tourists. That was the reason why I was able to get such a steal.
The KKKL coach departed Kovan Hub punctually at 7.00 am on 21 August 2014. We reached the 2nd link at 7.30 am for immigration and custom clearance. The process was smooth as it was a Thursday. The coach arrived at Yong Peng town for a 20 minutes stop over for us to have a quick bite and coffee break. There was another toilet break for the passengers after the toll near KL. We arrived Genting Highland at 2.30 pm and it was time to check in to the hotel.
Coaches were required to stop at the mushroom bus terminal before the First World Hotel due to the on going major construction works. The resort providing free shuttle buses to transfer tourists for both directions.
This was my first time staying at the First World Hotel. Before my departure, I was given the impression that the First World Hotel rooms are substandard. The rooms are small, smelly and dirty. So I was prepared for the worst. To my surprise it was not that bad as I could imagine. I was rather relief when I set my foot in. Though the toilet and the bathroom space was rather tight, but it does serve the purpose. The rooms were clean, the carpet and decor looked new. I believed the rooms had been renovated recently.
I had Hainanese chicken rice for lunch but it can not match the good taste back home. We tried the Thai dishes at the Kopitiam for dinner. The food standard was rated average. Prices of the food sold in Genting Highland were comparable to Singapore cafe. A plate of fried noodle cost S$12.00.
The concert performance was very good. Steven Ma was a good entertainer. He spoke well and able to connect with the audience. Susanna Kwan was indeed a Diva. Many of the Hong Kong popular TV drama series theme songs were sang by her. She was able to win the heart of the fans when she sang those theme songs. Majority of the fans were senior citizens. I can see the fans were having a wonderful time. The concert ended with all the people in the concert hall paying tribute to the casualties of flight MH 17 mishap. MH 17 was suspected being shot down by missile when it was flying over Ukraine. There were no survivor.
On the return trip, we took the free shuttle bus from the First World Hotel to the mushroom bus terminal and boarded the KKKL 28 seater coach at 2.30 pm. We arrived Yong Peng town at 7.30 pm for a quick dinner. It was a Saturday, the traffic on the highway and at the cause way was rather heavy. I arrived home at 11.30 pm. The good thing was I just walked home after alighted the coach.
