My Waterway @ Punggol -

                                                                          Punggol Waterway - 榜鹅水道

My Waterway @ Punggol - 榜鹅水道
The nature trail at Punggol Promenade which overlooks Coney Island has been opened in early March 2012. What started out as a plan to build a simple pipeline connected the two reservoirs for water transfer became Singapore's longest man-made waterway. My Waterway @ Punggol clinched the top honour at the International Water Association (IWA) biennial Project Innovation Awards, the first Asian Project ever do so. Some of the eco-friendly feature include energy - saving light fittings broadwalks made out of recycled materials and drains that have gravel and plants on top of them to filter rainwater before it flows into the Punggol Waterway. It has become a popular recreation spot for the residents and visitors. The Punggol Promenade was once upon a time where the famous Punggol sea food restaurants were located before they were relocated for the waterway redevelopment. The 2.4km nature trail is connected to the My Waterway @ Punggol (4.9km) that links up with Punggol Park via the park connector. My Waterway @ Punggol is a water way that connects the Sungei Punggol (Punggol River) to the Serangoon Reservoir. This is another big project after the Marina Barrage that undertakes by the PUB to supply fresh water for the nation. The My Waterway @ Punggol was well designed. There are proper foot path, jogging track, cycling track and landscaping. The scenery is beautiful. You will appreciate it if you look at some of the photos that I have taken. Best of all, the usage of the park is  free.
I had jogged and walked the My Waterway @ Punggol. I did not have a chance to cycle because I did not have a bicycle.
I owned 2 bicycles when I was staying at Dover Road. I brought the bicycles along when I shifted to Woodlands area. I gave them away when I shifted to Kovan Melody. There is no special lane for the cyclists. It is not safe to cycle on Singapore heavy traffic roads. It is also wrong to cycle on pedestrian pavement. Park is the only safe place to cycle.

My bicycle story - 脚车的故事
When Carrefour offered a Aleoca 20" folding bike at $98 (usual $138) I decided to get one. I wanted a less expensive folding bike that can satisfy the MRT requirement, 1140 x 640 x 360(D) which allows commuters to bring the bike in the train. The advertisement was published in the Straits Times on a Friday . I went down on the following Monday to Plaza Singapura and found out that there were only 3 bicycles left. One was sold and two were marked defective. The sales promoter told me that I can make a full payment and then he can issue a repair chit to change the defective front tyre. Since it was only the front tyre that was defective, I decided to make a purchase. I was told the bike will be ready on that Friday for collection. One day before I supposed to collect my new bike from Carefour, NTUC Xtra advertised for the similar product at $99 (usual $138).

When it was the Friday, I contacted the Carrefour Aleoca bicycle sales promoter. He told me that the bike was not ready for collection. I requested for a full refund since he cannot deliver as promised. He acceded to my request. With the refund I went to NTUC Xtra at NEX shopping mall to purchase my folding bike. By the time I settled everything, it was 6.30pm. Happily I folded the bike and pushed it to the Serangoon MRT station. I was stopped by a SBS MRT staff before I can enter the train. I was told that there are time restrictions to transport the folding bicycle in the train. Folding bikes are allowed in the trains on weekdays after 9.30 am to 4.30pm and after 7.30pm. No restriction on Saturday, Sunday and Public Holiday. Since I did not want to take the risk to cycle on the road, I decided to push the bicycle home. Anyway it was just a train station away. I was excited to try out the bicycle on that very Sunday. I folded the bike and transported it by train to the Punggol station. I started my journey from My Waterway @ Punggol (along Punggol Road after Coralinus)

When I reached Lorong Halus wet land area, the bicycle leg paddle had dislocated. I dismounted the bike and check. OMG, I discovered that the nut which was holding the leg paddle had been loosen. I cannot fix it back. I had no choice but to push the bicycle all the way back home. It took me 2 hours to reach home. After lunch, I sent the bicycle back to the NEX - NTUC . The Aleoca sales promoter replaced the defective leg paddle nut for me.

Now that the bicycle was repaired, I begun my cycling trip on Good Friday , 6 April 2012. My journey started from the Watertown Condo project site (next to the Punggol MRT station) and ended at the Hougang Avenue 7 park connector. I had taken photos along the way.

I would recommend to all my friends to explore the Punggol water way and Punggol Promenade yourselves. You can  enjoy the fresh air, sea breeze and the sun shine. You may choose to walk, jog or cycle. This will relief your work pressure from time to time. Good Health !
